JOHN HARGROVE
John Robert Hargrove was the second and last child in the family. The family lived in a small one-bedroom house in Anza, California. Growing up in the country had its benefits. They grew their own vegetables and chickens. John attended the one-room schoolhouse most of his elementary school days. Being a bright boy, he skipped the third grade.
Suffering from diphtheria caused him to spend one month in a hospital away from his family. The only good thing about it was that he learned to eat oatmeal. One day when he was walking home from school, he saw a herd of cattle stampeding down the road in his direction. He scampered up a tree just in time to save his life.
He did not really like growing up in the country, so he was quite pleased to move to West Los Angeles in Junior High School. He played baseball his four high school years, while attending University High School; a place where he knew Hollywood children and future stars. As catcher of his baseball team, he sometimes played opposite Robert Redford. Those are pleasant memories.
John married Verna when they were both 18. They raised 5 children, and now have 9 grandchildren, whom John loves very much. The family faithfully attended church, and John almost always taught an adult Sunday School class or an evening Bible class. When the kids grew up, John taught a few home Bible studies. John always typed out his studies in hopes of someday publishing his work, until he had 5 shoe boxes full of studies. He now enjoys being a published author.
John worked as a public school teacher while he raised his family. Once his boys were in high school, he enjoyed racing home after work, picking up Verna, and going to a sporting event his sons were playing in. He mostly enjoyed watching them play football and baseball.
The girls were older than the boys, and John did not develop a close relationship with his daughters until they were grown and married. He learned the interest of each of his children and attempted to support them in their career choices.
As he approached his 70th birthday, the doctors discovered that he had a brain tumor. This was hard on him, and he was often ill. Rest time became essential and he made good use of his time studying the Bible even more and worshipping the Lord.
You will find John’s work to be complete. If you enjoy a good Bible study book, you will enjoy reading John’s books.
